In contrast to the tree that innately finds its way, the development on the site is, at the same time that the vegetation prospers, in all sorts of trouble. The architect cannot get the client to approve the plans, the planners aren’t happy with the proposed volume of the building and the construction is over budget. All these obstacles slow the project down as one person’s thought faces another in a constant dance of possibility that could stop the project altogether. The energy of everyone involved in getting the building to be a financial and architectural success can easily end up getting buried in the details. Instead of that energy going directly into producing growth on the ground, it is in continual danger of being lost as it dissipates into a messy battle of wills. The system becomes one of opposition, as one thought opposes another.
On the building site, the focus is on an outcome. As observers, we may not know what the building will be, or the details of how or when it will be completed, but we do expect a result to be achieved. In order to reach this end goal, a myriad things need to happen along the way, and anything that slows down the satisfaction of any of these necessary steps is something that has to be dealt with and solved. Information that might take us down a different route tends not to be welcomed. What we tend to do is to push ever harder on towards our own imposed goal, rather than dwelling on what comes up. In order to get things done, different people take different approaches, but at the extreme, the driving project manager might ride roughshod over concerns that others might have. Where an objection has the legal or physical power to stop the development these may have to be acceded to, but others can be pushed on through, as the neighbour with a concern is placated, the tree is dug out or the lump in the ground gets broken up and bulldozed over. This is a builder who gets things done. As Machiavelli might have said, ‘the end justifies the means’.
